Hello Columbine Community!

A huge thank you to all of our families who joined us for conferences this week! Taking time to connect with teachers, celebrate your child’s growth, and talk together about their learning makes such a difference. We are grateful for the partnership you bring to our school and for the many ways you show up for our kiddos. We hope to many more of you next week for conferences on Tuesday.

We also want to invite all of our current and prospective Columbine volunteers to join us for Coffee with Columbine on Friday, October 16th! This month’s gathering will focus on volunteering at Columbine, how to get involved, how to ensure we are supporting and responding thoughtfully to all students, practicing some scenarios through an intercultural lens, and discussing how our volunteers help strengthen our school community. This coffee will be lead by myself, our Dean of Instruction, and our Dean of Culture.

Whether you volunteer regularly or are simply curious about ways to get involved, we’d love to have you join us.

Enjoy your weekend!

Congratulations Ms. Burger's Crew for ATTENDANCE!

Ms. Burger's crew was our FIRST crew to get 10 ice cream scoops. Our crews earn scoops when they have 95% attendance or better. We are looking for the next two crews to earn their 10 scoops. Thank you all for ensuring that your students are here all day everyday when they are healthy!

Coffee with Columbine - Volunteers!

Our upcoming Coffee with Columbine on October 16th is going to be a time for our incredible and willing volunteers and any prospective volunteers. We hope that anyone who has signed up to be a volunteer in our library, in our lunch/recess program, as a crew hero, or beyond will prioritize this time together with our school team. This will be a time for our volunteers to come together, build their intercultural competence, run through some scenarios together, and ask questions about how to ensure we are all supporting all students, everyday!

We hope you all will join us for our special TWO-day event this year. We will start on October 16th with a Movie Night on the Columbine Field. We will follow that with our Fall Festival on Saturday, October 17th. This is one of our favorite events as it brings the whole community together for games, fun, pumpkins, and connection.

Some notes: during movie night and the Fall Festival, we ask that if your child uses the restroom, an adult accompanies them into the building. And as a reminder, no dogs are permitted on school grounds and no alcohol, drugs, or tobacco can be consumed on school property.

Save the DATE for our FALL FESTIVAL!

Conferences

Thank you all who attended night one of conferences! Our next conference night is next week on Tuesday, October 6th.  If you haven’t already, please be sure to sign up for a conference time with your child’s teacher using this link.

Before your conference, we encourage you to review the student data report that came home in Thursday folders last week. Taking a few minutes to preview your child’s current data will help you come ready to celebrate their growth, ask questions, and partner with their teacher around goals and next steps.

We look forward to connecting with you and talking together about your child’s learning and growth!

Collective Learning on Intercultural Competence

For three years we have engaged as a school community in the Intercultural Development Inventory, monthly Community Conversations, and a book group around diversity and how to support diversity in our school.  This year will be no different.  Any family member who wants to take the 50-item Intercultural Development Inventory for free and have a conversation about the results, please send your email address to Corey at corey_jenks@dpsk12net. Sixty-seven family members have engaged with it in past years!

Learn more about the IDI here

We also offer a book group that selects one book on diversity and then discusses a chapter from it every 3-4 weeks as well as a monthly Community Conversation that takes place in the Columbine cafeteria from 8:00-8:45 the second Friday of every month (Oct. 9 , Nov. 13, Dec 11, Jan. 15, Feb. 12, Mar. 12, Apr. 9, and  May 14).  Please join us for any and all activities!"
