Hello Columbine Community!

We hope you'll join us this Monday at 8:00 a.m. for our first Coffee with Columbine of the year!

This year, we're giving Coffee with Columbine (previously Coffee with Corey) a new twist. Each month, we'll focus on a different academic or social-emotional topic and invite our content experts to join us. Our goal is to help families better understand what learning looks like at Columbine and how you can be partners in supporting your kiddos at home.

This month's focus: What does it mean to be an EL school?

We'll be joined by our EL School Designer, Linnea Krizsan, who will lead a conversation about Expeditionary Learning (EL)—what it looks and feels like in our classrooms, what makes the EL experience at Columbine unique, and how it differs from what students may experience at a non-EL school.

I'll also share a brief update from our latest CSC meeting and leave time for questions and conversation.

Grab a cup of coffee and come learn with us. We hope to see you Monday at 8:00! ☕💛

This week in CREW

This week in Crew we are launch the ZONES of REGULATION.

The Zones of Regulation is a researched-based social emotional curriculum that teaches children how to identify their emotions, how to recognize their emotions, and what behaviors will productively help them move out of different 'zones.'

 Learning Target Ideas:

I can identify what it looks like and sounds like to be a leader in each zone

I can identify my zone and a strategy to help me show up as a learner.

It is okay to feel what you feel! We have to have strategies that help us show up as learners!

I can describe how my feelings match my behaviors in each zone

Sometimes people show that they are in the red in different ways

Some get quiet and distant, some get louder and their red is more visible

Help students identify how their behaviors show up in different zones.

We are still focused on Hispanic Heritage Month!

Attendance - The Scoop!

Attendance MATTERS! At Columbine, we want our students here learning every day! Arriving on time and staying until the end of the day ensures your child receives every minute of necessary instruction and crew connections. This year, we have an attendance incentive! Each day when our classes have 95% attendance or better, they earn and ice cream scoop! When the crews get to 10 scoops, they get an ice cream sundae party!

26-27 Collaborative School Committee

We had our first CSC meeting of the year on Thursday.

Here are the meeting minutes in English and Spanish

Additionally here is the deck we used to share information.

CSC will be meeting the third Thursday of each month from 5:00-6:15. We will always have a virtual participation option with this same link each month.

I will share a high level overview of our CSC items at Coffee with Columbine on Monday, September 21st!

Our next CSC meeting will be on October 15th from 5:00-6:15pm

Recess Parent Volunteer Opportunitiy

We’re excited to continue our recess parent volunteer opportunity at Columbine this year, and we’d love for you to join us! As a recess volunteer, you are not only helping our staff dedicate more time to academics and student needs, but it’s also a fantastic way to engage with your child and their classmates during recess.

As a volunteer, you’ll sign up for one 45-minute shift per month (on the same day each month that works for your schedule) and you will help to supervise students on the playground, engaging in fun playground activities (when appropriate), and assisting with the overall flow of outside time. It's a wonderful chance to connect with the school community while supporting the overall school experience.

If you’re interested in learning more, please fill out this form by Tuesday, Sept 22nd, and we’ll follow up with more details. If you have any specific questions, feel free to reach out to Taylor Johnson at tvitale777@gmail.com. Please note that all volunteers will need to attend a 30-minute virtual Zoom training, and will need to have a current background check on file with DPS.

Thank you so much for considering this opportunity to make a positive impact at Columbine!

A Note from the PTA

Thank you to all who attended our first meeting after BTSN! If you were unable to attend, it's not too late! You can catch up on what we talked about here and join us anytime!

Cougar Crew Heros need YOU!

If you would like to help support our teachers this year, please join our Cougar Crew Hero team (formerly Room Heros).  Crew Heros will work directly with teachers on small projects throughout the year and the time commitment is approximately two hours per month,  Please know you are not required to join the PTA to be a Crew Hero and there is no financial commitment to help support our staff.

Fall Festival is upon us!

This year, Fall Festival will be a two day event: a community movie night on Friday, October 16 and the Festival on Saturday, October 17th.  If you would like to join the planning committee, join our virtual meeting on Wednesday, September 16th at 5pm! Can't join the meeting, but still want to help out and/or sponsor an event, please email columbinecougarspta@gmail.com.

Monthly PTA Meetings

Our monthly PTA meetings will be held the first Wednesday of each month at 6pm in the library.  The next meeting will be October 7th; dinner, childcare as well as a virtual option will always be provided!

Gifted and Talented (GT) Cognitive Testing - ECE, Kinder, 2nd, 3rd, 4th grade - deadline 10/2

Does your child learn new things very rapidly? Is he/she exceptionally curious, often seeking new challenges? Perhaps your child is demonstrating gifted and talented (GT) characteristics.  The fall GT cognitive testing nomination window is now open for families who are seeking Gifted and Talented (GT) identification and/or placement at a Highly Gifted Magnet Site. Interested families should submit this nomination form by October 2nd. If you have questions, contact Karen Wagner, GT Teacher at  karen_wagner@dpsk12.org or (720) 663-0396 (phone/text).  Check out the DPS GT Family Website for more information and resources.

*Note - if your child is in 1st or 5th grade, there is no need to submit a nomination form. Your child will be tested through GT universal screening. Please refer to the information shared by your child’s teacher.
