Hello Columbine Community,
On Friday, we had our whole-school crew circle to kick off Empathy and Black History Month. We were joined by Principal Douglas Clinkscales from McAuliffe Manual Middle School who shared with us an excerpt for Denzel Washington’s Commencement Speech. He reminded us to Take Risks and Fall Forward. I love this quote for so many reasons. It connects so beautifully to our academic mindset that my ability grows with my effort, it connects to our LEAP focus of ambition, and it connects seamlessly to the inclusion information night we held on Tuesday.
Thank you so so much to all who attended the Columbine Community Inclusion Night on Tuesday. Families heard from myself, Michael Atkins (Director of the Black Student Success Team) and Dr. Ellen Miller-Brown from the University of Denver. We shared about our own journey towards developing Cultural Competence and how the IDI was an integral part of this growth and learning. As our work continues, we’ve invited any community member who is interested to take the IDI, free of charge to families. We already have 14 families who have signed up! If you are curious, interested, and willing to take a risk, and fall forward, please reach out to take your own IDI assessment. DUE DATE for the IDI sign up is February 9th.

Black History Month!
We are so excited to celebrate Black History Month here at Columbine. Each year, the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH) selects a Black History Month theme. ASALH is regarded as an authority on the topic of Black History and the source for themes for the month for many educational and public institutions. This year’s theme is ‘African Americans and the Arts’.
We will be honing our own artistic abilities by adorning and decorating our classroom doors to represent the learning, celebration, recognition, and appreciation for Black History Month.
We can’t wait to see many of our Black and African American men in our classrooms to participate in read alouds. We have also invited many special guests including members of the Black Student Alliance from Manual High School.
Recess and Lunch Volunteers Needed!
We are hoping to add some helping hands and watchful eyes for our recess and lunch blocks during the day. Here is a sign-up genius and we would LOVE for families to sign-up to help either on a regular basis or on an ‘as I can’ basis. You do not need to be here for the whole slot, you can come for part or the whole time. You will need to have your background check completed which is a fast and easy process. ¡Mes negro de la historia!
Estamos muy emocionados de celebrar el Mes de la Historia Afroamericana aquí en Columbine. Cada año, la Asociación para el Estudio de la Vida e Historia Afroamericana (asalha) selecciona un tema del Mes de la Historia Afroamericana. ASALH es considerada una autoridad en el tema de la Historia Afroamericana y la fuente de temas del mes para muchas instituciones educativas y públicas. El tema de este año es ‘Los afroamericanos y las artes”.
Perfeccionaremos nuestras propias habilidades artísticas adornando y decorando las puertas de nuestras aulas para representar el aprendizaje, la celebración, el reconocimiento y el aprecio por el Mes de la Historia Afroamericana.
No podemos esperar a ver a muchos de nuestros hombres negros y afroamericanos en nuestras aulas para participar en la lectura en voz alta. También hemos invitado a muchos invitados especiales, incluidos miembros de la Black Student Alliance de Manual High School.
