Community Update – 8/18/23

Posted August 22, 2023

Hello Columbine Community,

We just wrapped up an incredible week back with our staff. I may be biased here, but I truly believe we have the most incredible staff in this district. Each and every one of our teachers has been all in all week prepping, planning, and setting up learning spaces for your children. On Thursday, we all took a walking tour of our neighborhood. We visited PF Donuts, Manual High School, The Whittier Cafe, Madame CJ Walker Park, and the Ford Warren Library. We learned about and appreciated the beauty and history of our neighborhood and reflected on the responsibility we have to instill deep pride in the legacy of Columbine. We cannot wait for our hallways, classrooms, and playgrounds to be filled again with our student crew!

ECE Family Info

ECE families, we are looking forward to seeing many of you for one on one meetings on Monday! Please see this ECE specific guidance for our arrival and dismissal procedures.

Heat at Columbine

As you all are very well aware, it is HOT. While we wait in high anticipation for the completion of our AC install project, we are not experiencing cool air yet. We are utilizing all heat mitigation strategies we can control in the building. Despite these efforts, it is very warm. You can support your kiddo during these hot days by sending them in cool clothes and with a water bottle. Please see this heat letter to address how we handle extreme heat days and the possibility of an early release.

Breakfast in the Cafeteria

Our cafeteria will open at 7:30am for students to come in and have a hot breakfast. All students must use the main entry doors located off of 29th and Elizabeth between 7:30-7:50am. The cafeteria will be open from 7:30-7:50 am. If students arrive after 7:50, they can pick up breakfast in the office as a grab-and-go option and can eat in their classroom.

Columbine New Family Night – 8/22 @ 4:00-5:00pm

All new Columbine families, please stay after school on Tuesday for our Columbine New Family Orientation. We will meet in the cafeteria and this will be a time to run through all of our systems, celebrations, traditions, handbooks, and volunteer opportunities. We will be joined by our PTA!

Black Excellence Plan Session – 8/22 @ 5:00pm

Our first Black Excellence planning session was fantastic. We had an engaged and productive meeting to begin planning for and contributing to our Black Excellence Plan. On Tuesday at 5:00pm, we will have a follow up session to look at the planning that took place and begin formalizing the plan. You can also join virtually using this link.

Please see the deck that was shared here. In addition, below are some of the resources we looked at in thinking about Excellence of and for all of our Black students and families.

I believe that I sit in one of the most rewarding and humping positions as principal of Columbine. I want to thank each and every one of you for trusting our school and our staff to love, teach, and look after your children. We promise, we will do just that.

Here’s to a great 23-24 school year!
